The Island

The town of Skiathos, a modern holiday resort with excellent tourist infrastructure, is also the only settlement on the island. Located at the southeastern end of the island in a sheltered bay that divides the island of Bourtzi in two, the settlement is relatively new, having been built around 1829-1830 on the site of the corresponding ancient city. Its trademark has always been its large natural harbour, which regulated the life of the town in the older and more recent years. Today it is mainly a haven for pleasure boats, which gives the island a strong cosmopolitan character.
